Mental Health of Students Must Figure in Restarting Classes

As officials across the nation decide how best to open schools, one aspect too often overlooked is students’ mental health. Awareness of the pressures on our children is the first step towards helping them heal and preparing them to learn.

COVID-19 has left many kids feeling lonely and isolated. Research on the effect of the lockdowns published in the June issue of the Journal of the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry concludes that young people experiencing loneliness may be as much as three times more likely to sink into depression in the future, but additionally that their mental health could be impacted for at least nine years because of it.

One answer? Since 2003, HealthCorps has worked in high-need schools, supplementing existing health and wellness programs emphasizing physical activity, nutrition, mental resilience and civic engagement. These are teenagers who, even in normal circumstances, experience disparities in access to health services based on their socioeconomic status, geographic region, race or ethnicity – with perhaps predictable results. Specifically, higher rates of chronic disease (including stress) and lower measures of both quality of life and life expectancy.

And yet, through our unique curriculum – created by top heathcare professionals and constantly updated to match students’ needs – the students we work with have flourished. They exercise more, eat better, and practice positive thought. And, yes, they engage with their communities.

Since stress has always been an issue for many of these teens, one of the most requested lessons we were asked to bring to classrooms even before the pandemic hit was  “Bust My Stress.”  And now? Add the coronavirus-induced feelings of isolation to that equation, and you begin to see how fragile our nation’s teens may be.

As one of our Florida students so heartbreakingly told us amid the lockdowns: “I still keep it in, but I still think negative like every night. I cry it out so I won’t have to feel that way again in the morning.”

Building mental resilience has become an increased focus of our work.

Of course, parents have their own role to play in their teenagers’ healing process.

“They can help by reassuring teens that, just because they’re nervous or scared, doesn’t mean they’re really in any danger,” says Mark Goulston, M.D., a HealthCorps advisory board member and widely quoted expert on building a positive culture. “By reminding them that their bodies don’t really understand the fear, and by talking it out and discussing the fear, both the parent and child will feel better and closer.”

The HealthCorps program is delivered by highly trained recent college graduates who are future medical and health policy professionals. They interact with teens on a daily basis – though, these days, virtually – and have developed some simple steps that can help youths through these trying times. Among them:

• Meditate or try deep-breathing methods, which increase your body’s natural ability to relax during high-stress moments.

• Get moving.

• Prioritize sleep.

• Talk things out with someone you trust.

• Do or watch something that makes you laugh.

• Keep a non-judgmental journal to help process thoughts.

• Practice gratitude and positive self-talk.

Genetics, Diagnosis, Treatment: NIH Takes on Sickle Cell Disease Globally

Each year, some 150,000 children in Nigeria are born with sickle cell disease, the most common – and often life-threatening – inherited blood disorder in the world.

"I was not happy when I read that Nigeria will have the highest contribution to the global burden of sickle cell disease by 2050 – if we continue at the present birth rate and the level of inactivity in newborn screening," says hematologist Obiageli Nnodu, M.D., the lead researcher in Nigeria for the Sickle Pan African Research Consortium (SPARCo), funded by the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI), part of the National Institutes of Health. "As a country, we can do better than that.

After all, this is a disease where children die undiagnosed, and largely from preventable causes such as bacterial infections."Sickle cell disease affects 20 million people worldwide, including at least 100,000 in the United States, mainly African Americans, but Hispanics and Asian-Americans, too.

To help address the problem on a global scale, the NHLBI has been supporting programs in sub-Saharan Africa, where more than 75 percent of the sickle cell disease births worldwide occur. SPARCo, with a hub in Tanzania, and additional sites in Nigeria and Ghana, works to develop an infrastructure for sickle cell disease research, health care, education, and training to take place in Africa.

Online Learning and Education During and After Covid

"We are showing that with effective partnerships, significant advances in health and biomedical science can be achieved," says Tanzania-based Julie Makani, M.D., Ph.D., who leads the SPARCo consortium. SPARCo, in collaboration with the Sickle Africa Data Coordinating Center, led by Ambroise Wonkam, M.D., in South Africa, created Sickle In Africa, which has a growing electronic registry of more than 10,000 individuals with sickle cell disease.

"The genetic diversity of Africa’s population allows scientific research that will increase our understanding of how a disease caused by a single gene can manifest in such different ways," Makani explains.Newborn screening, as Nnodu notes, is the first step to reduce mortality and suffering for these children, and for that, they need good tests readily available at the point of care.

That’s why NHLBI supports research towards development of diagnostics, such as a new rapid result test that is relatively inexpensive, accurate, and can provide a timely diagnosis of sickle cell disease. The test does not require sophisticated laboratory equipment, electricity, refrigeration, or highly trained personnel – a critical advantage for countries with few resources.

On the treatment front, a large multinational NHLBI-funded clinical trial found that a daily hydroxyurea pill was safe and effective for young children living with sickle cell disease in sub-Saharan Africa. The NHLBI also has its sights on developing genetic therapies for the disease, as part of a newly announced NIH collaboration with the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.

The goal of the partnership, which also addresses HIV, is to advance possible gene-based cures to clinical trials in the United States and relevant countries in sub-Saharan Africa within the next seven to 10 years."A person’s health should not be limited by their geographic location, whether it’s in rural America or sub-Saharan Africa," says Gary H. Gibbons, M.D., director of the NHLBI.

"Harnessing the power of science is needed to transcend borders if we want to improve health for all."

High School Success Stories: Helping All Students Thrive

By Carrie Goux For NewsUSA(NewsUSA) – At a time when it’s hard to find moments of everyday joy during the school year, a leading nonprofit organization has given high schools reason to celebrate. The third annual GreatSchools College Success Award recognizes schools that provide a strong foundation for their students to build pathways after graduation. This is the only national award that uses education data to identify schools that prepare their students not only to enroll in college, but return for a second year and succeed in college-level coursework.

This year GreatSchools presented the 2020 award to 2,158 schools in the 29 states that connect postsecondary data to high school information. The College Success Awards also offer a glimpse into the best practices woven into the fabric of these schools, from ensuring rigorous academics are widely available to providing 1:1 college counseling for every student.

As the pandemic continues to threaten the financial stability of the nation and disrupt opportunities for young people, these award-winning high schools can offer hope to communities looking for strength to recover from devastating loss.

The College Success Award helps the entire learning community understand which schools in their area adequately prepare students to graduate, enroll in college, and succeed once they get there.Schools are complex. They succeed (and stumble) in many different ways — but this award seeks to highlight successes that might not otherwise be seen.

Class 12th My Mother At Sixty-Six Summary

At Veterans Memorial High School in Brownsville, Texas, success includes encouraging all students — 92 percent of whom are low-income — to explore the school’s 13 dual-enrollment classes. At Newark’s North Star Academy, after research showed low-income graduates lacked college-savvy support, the school created an alumni department that offers coaching to college freshmen to help them adjust to their new life.

These are just a few of the best practices the College Success Award reveals. Parents and school leaders can find out if their school won an award and explore more insights about how to look for schools engaging in practices that will help their child succeed by visiting GreatSchools.org to search for their school, and learn from videos, articles, and more. Live Online Academy Prepares Preschoolers for Next Steps

The ongoing coronavirus pandemic is reshaping and challenging the field of education, particularly early childhood education, where the benefits of in-person school are well understood but simply not an option for many children for at least the remainder of the current school year.Kids ‘eTuitionClasses’ Kids Learning Academies, a leading national childcare provider, recognized the need for more options for early childhood education for children unable to attend preschool in person, and responded by creating the Kids ‘eTuitionClasses’ Kids Online Learning Academy.

The Kids ‘eTuitionClasses’ Kids Online Academy is an online learning platform designed to engage early learners in a structured, curriculum-based platform that allows for teacher and peer interaction. It helps preschoolers practice developmentally appropriate key concepts in topics including literacy, math, science, and social studies while having fun and refining physical and social/emotional skills as well. The Online Academy includes live, interactive 30-minute classes Monday through Friday, hosted by a certified teacher.

The activities are based on the exclusive, research-based Kids ‘eTuitionClasses’ Kids curriculum, and children are able to ask questions, play games, and participate in arts and crafts.Children are online together, so teachers can get to know them and call on them to respond and participate. However, there is no camera or video access on the child’s side for safety and privacy.Parents and their preschoolers report high levels of satisfaction with the program, as one mom in Texas says on behalf of her son, "we have felt very guilty about keeping him at home even though we know this is all just temporary.

New Data: AP CSP Course is Diversifying Computer Science Pipeline

For too long there has been a shortage of women and a lack of diversity in both computer science classrooms and in the workforce. AP Computer Science Principles, or AP CSP, was introduced by the College Board four years ago to change the invitation to computer science and address the shortage of young women and students of color entering the fields of science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM).

Now, there is encouraging news about efforts to prepare more students –and a more diverse set of students — for the next generation of computer science jobs. According to new College Board data, students from the class of 2019 who took Advanced Placement Computer Science Principles (AP CSP) were three times more likely to declare a computer science major in college, compared to similar students who did not take AP CSP.

Differences are similarly large for female, Black, Hispanic, and first-generation college students.New research out today is good news for business leaders looking to hire the next generation of computer science workers. "Four years ago, we set out to change the invitation to computer science education," says College Board Global Policy Chief Stefanie Sanford. "This new research provides compelling evidence that AP CSP is doing exactly that.""We are inspired to see how this course is playing a role in students’ high school and college careers just four years after its launch. States, schools, and educators providing access to AP CSP are ensuring a more representative body of students will become our next generation of computer scientists, engineers, and technology leaders."College freshmen who declare a computer science major take a critical step toward receiving the second-highest-paid college degree in the nation, according to the National Association of Colleges and Employers.

The median annual wage for computer and information technology occupations was $88,240 in May 2019. And yet, a code.org analysis of 2017 Bureau of Labor Statistics data finds women represent just 24 percent of the 5 million people in computing occupations, while 15 percent are Black or Hispanic. The College Board study also finds AP CSP students are nearly twice as likely to enroll in AP Computer Science A (AP CSA) — a more computer-programming-focused course — compared to similar students who did not take CSP. Black students who take AP CSP are three times more likely to also take AP CSA. Notably, that’s virtually the same share as Asian CSP students, who have long led AP CSA participation.Business leaders such as Shanika Hope, head of the U.S. division of Amazon Future Engineer, are enthusiastic about AP Computer Science Principles and its future economic impact.

"At Amazon, we know a high-quality computer science education is key to helping students build their best and brightest future, especially those from underserved and underrepresented communities. We’re excited that today’s research shows further evidence that courses like AP CSP — which we provide for thousands of our Amazon Future Engineer schools across the U.S. — are preparing a more diverse group of students to enter the 21st century workforce."The first year of AP Computer Science Principles in 2016-17 attracted more students than any other AP course debut, and participation is on the rise. Still, not all students have access to high-quality computer science education.

Currently, less than half of the nation’s high schools teach foundational computer science. States are working to broaden participation in computer science by passing policies to make computer science a fundamental part of the K-technology12 education system. Students interested in AP CSP can learn more at collegeboard.org/csp.

How Hands-On Learners Thrive as Transportation Techs

The arrival of the new year means new decisions for students planning their futures. Although the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic has thrown many students’ career plans for a loop, the increased time at home allows students and parents to reflect and explore opportunities they might not have considered. One place to start is by discovering a student’s learning style.Everyone has a learning style. Some people are visual learners, some learn best by listening, and some are hands-on — they learn by doing. For these hands-on learners, a career in a hands-on field, such as the high-tech transportation industry, not only suits their strengths, but also brings them satisfaction and security. As many parents spend more time observing their children’s learning in a virtual school environment, they are developing an appreciation for different learning styles. Many hands-on learners struggle in traditional learning environments. However, these children and teens thrive when they engage in educational opportunities that support their strengths, and can put them on the road to successful careers.
