Class 12th CBSE History Thinkers, Beliefs and Buildings Cultural Developments (C600 BCE-600 CE) Summary of the Chapter

Thinkers, Beliefs and Buildings Cultural Developments (C600 BCE-600 CE) Summary of the Chapter

In this chapter we shall go on a long journey across a thousand years to read about philosophes and their sttempts to understand the world they inhabited and the world they shaped.

We will also learn about the way their ideas were compiled as oral and written texts. Some of these ideas were expressed in architecture and sculpture, symbolic, representations of the imagination of men and women.

The sources that we can use to reconstruct exciting world of ideas and beliefs include Buddhist, Jains and Brahmanical texts, material remains etc.

The mind-first millennium BCE is generally considered as a turning point in world history, it saw the emergence of thinkers such as Zarathustra in Iran, Kong Zi in China, Socrates, Plato and Aristotle in Greece and Mahavira and Gautam Buddha among many others in India. They tried to find answers to fundamental questions about the meaning of existence and the relationship between human beings and the cosmic order.

There were several pre-existing traditions of thought, religious belief and practice. The best known amongst these was the Vedic traditions.

The early Vedic tradition is known from the Rigveda, compiled between C. 1500-1000 BCE, consisting of hymns in praise of variety of deities, especially, Agni, Indra and Soma. Sacrifices were performed collectively as well as individually by the people, where they prayed for cattle, sons, good health, peace, long life, rain etc.

Some people began speculating on the significant of the sacrifice. Were physical actions sufficient, or was there a deeper meaning? Many of these ideas are found in the Upanishads, which show that people were concerned about the meaning of life, the possibility of life after death, and of rebirth. If people were reborn, was this due to their past actions? These questions were hotly debated. We get a glimpse of lively discussions and debates form Buddhidt texts. These texts were preserved in manuscripts for several centuries in monasteries different parts of Asia. Modern translations have been prepared from texts in a variety of languages- Pali, Sanskrit, Chinese and Tibetan.

The basic philosophy of the Jains was already in existence in north India before the birth of Vardhamana, who came to be known as Mahavira, in the 6th century BCE.

According to Jaina tradition Mahavira was preceded by 23 other teachers or tirthankaras, literary those who could guide men and women across the river of existence.

The main ideas or principles of Jainism are- (i) ahimsa, (ii) karma and (iii) monastic existence. Jaina monks and nuns took five vows: to abstain from killing, stealing and lying; to observe celibacy and abstain from possesssing property.

Jainism spread to many parts of India. Like the Buddhists, Jaina scholars produced a wealth of literature in variety of languages-Prakrit, Sanskrit and Tamil. Many of these were carefully preserved in libraries attached to temples.

One of the most influncial teachers of the time was the Buddha. Historians have tried to reconstruct details of his life from hagiographies. According to historical records, Shidhartha, as the Buddha was named as a child, was son of the ruler of the Sakya clan. At the age of 30 years he left the palace in search of his own truth. After a number of experiments with bodily mortification and near death he finally attained enlightenment- that is he found a way out of the misery that had affected him so deeply when he was first confronted with the pain of old age, disease and death. After this he came to be known as tha Buddha or the enlightened one and had a long career as a teachers who taught the dharma of the path of righteous living.

The main teachings of the Buddha are:

(i) The world is transient (anicca) and constantly changing, it is also soulles (ametta) as there is nothing permanent or eternal in it. Within this transient world, dukkha or sorrow in intrinsic to human existence.

(ii) There is a way out, through the pursuit of a path of moderation between severe penance and the cycle of birth and rebirth.

(iii) The Buddha also upheld individual agency and righteous action as the means to escape from the cycle of birth and rebirth.

(iv) In the earliest froms of Buddhism, the existence of god was considered irrelevant. The Buddha regarded the social world as the creation of human rather than as of divine origin.

(v) Buddha advised kings and gahapatics to be humane and ethical. Individual effort was expected to transform social relations. It was also expected to lead to self-realisation and ribbans, literally the blowing out of the ego and desire and thus end the cycle of suffering for those who renounced the world.

Soon a body of disciples collected around the Buddha and he founded a sangha, an organisation of monks who too became teachers of the dhamma As they lived in alms, they were known as bhikkus.

The Buddha’s followers came from many social group. They included kings, wealth men and gahspatis and also humbles flok: workers, slaves and crafts people.

The tradition of erecting stupas may have been pre-Buddhist, but they came to be associated with Buddhism. The stupa originated as a simple semi-circular mound of earth, later called the anda. Gradually it enolved into a more complex structure, balancing round and square shapes. The early stupas at Sanchi and Bharhut were plain exept for the stone railings, which resembled a bamboo or fence, and the gateways which were rightly carved and installed at the four cardinal points. Inscriptions found on the railings and pillars record donations made for building and decorating stupas.

The sculpture wes removed from some stupas and transported all the way to Europe. To understand the meaning of development of sculpture, art historians had to acquire familiarity with hagiograophies of the Buddha. According to these the Buddha attained enlightenment while meditating under a tree. Many early sculptors did not show the Buddha in human form-instead, they sherved his presence through signs-so the empty seat was meant to indicate the meditation of the Buddha and the stupa was meant to represent the mahaparinirvanas. Another frequently used symbol was the wheel on the pillar. This stood for the first sermon of the Buddha, delivered at Sarnath.

By the first century CE there is evidence for change in Buddhist ideas and practices. Early Buddhist teachings had given great importance to self effort in achieving nibbans. However, gradually the idea of a saviour, known as Maitreys Buddha, was developed. It was believed that he could ensure salvation. Simultaneously, the concept of the Bodhisatta was also developed. The new worship of images of the Buddha and Boddhisattas became an important part of Buddhism. The new way of thinking developed in Buddhism was called Mahayana, literally the great vehicle. Those who adopted these beliefs described the older tradition (of Buddhism) as Hinayana or the lesser vehicle.

The notion of a saviour was not unique to Buddhism. We find similar ideas being developed in different ways within traditions that we now consider part of Hinduism. These included Vaishnavism (a form of Hinduism where Vishnu was worshipped as the principal deity and Shaivism (a tradition within which Shiva was regarded as the chief god), where there was growing emphasis on the worship of a chosen deity.

The bond between the devotes and the god was visualised as one of love, devotion or bhakti. In the case of Vaishnavism cults developed around the various avatars or incarnations of the deity. Ten avatars were recognided within the tradition. In the case of Shiva, his presence was very often indicated by the linga, although he was occasionally represented in human form.

Eighty-Eight Percent of Teachers Seek Book Discounts and More

It’s undeniable that teachers are considered to be some of the most significant and respected people in our lives. In fact, about 80 percent of Americans feel strongly so, according to the Global Teacher Status Index.

Here May Be One Positive Aspect Of The Student Debt Crisis

Despite being revered, many teachers still don’t have enough access to the primary tools of education: books. According to a recent panel with educators, bookseller Barnes & Noble found that the number one thing teachers want more of for their classrooms is books. Furthermore, educators said they often use their own money to buy additional books for their students.

What is an eLearning Platform?

This need will be particularly relevant in coming months as teachers do their back-to-school shopping. Last year, teachers spent an average of $652 of their own money on classroom supplies, according to Agile Education Marketing and SheerID. That’s likely why that same survey found that 88 percent of teachers actively search for companies that offer a teacher discount.

Educators will be glad to know, then, that Barnes & Noble is extending its annual Back to School Educator Appreciation Days, making it the longest one ever. The world’s largest retail bookseller kicks off the deals on July 20 and celebrates educators every Saturday and Sunday through September 15.

“It’s central to Barnes & Noble to recognize our teachers and administrators for their dedication and hard work,” says Tracy Vidakovich, Vice President of Business Development. “We’re thrilled to lengthen this year’s Educator Appreciation Days to help them stretch both their time and budgets with more days to shop and save on school year items.”

Here May Be One Positive Aspect of The Student Debt Crisis

Just how much are all those stories about crippling student debt having on college campuses? You have only to ask post-millennials now trying – although not always successfully – to avoid being saddled with the same heavy burden of debt as their predecessors.

Nurse Educators Play Essential Roles In Public Health

Not only did 83 percent of current college students surveyed consider what their total costs would be before matriculating – just 69 percent of recent graduates had such foresight – but 39 percent of them said the potential price tag was such “a huge factor” that they purposely limited their choice of schools to the most affordable, according to Fidelity Investments’ new “College Savings: Lessons Learned Study.” Only 32 percent of recent graduates, alas, had shown similar restraint.

What is an eLearning Platform?

“It seems today’s college students are perhaps more aware of the financial situation they entered into than those who graduated before them,” says Melissa Ridolfi, Fidelity’s vice president of retirement and college leadership. “That’s a positive development.”

All told, student debt in the U.S. now totals more than $1.5 trillion – second only to mortgage debt, Forbes reports. And the 69 percent or so of the Class of 2018 who took out student loans graduated with an average debt balance of $29,800.

Four Ways to Say Thanks to Tradesmen on National Tradesmen Day

So it’s understandable why recent graduates would be so anxious over whether they’d ever be able to pay off their loans that they’re now having second thoughts about their decisions:

• 40 percent say that while they don’t regret going to college, they would have made different choices in hindsight.

• Only 14 percent felt the value of their education was worth more than the money they had spent.

Offshore Wind Power Prepares to Set Sail

And future college students should listen to this sage advice from the more than 4,000 respondents surveyed – all recent graduates, current undergraduates, and parents of either or both – on what would have done wonders to ease their own stress levels.

“When asked ‘If you knew then what you know now when it comes to school selection, what would you do differently?’ the no. 1 answer for all respondents was ‘I would have started saving earlier,’” Ridolfi says.

Which logically brings us to another key finding of the study: only 17 percent of current students and recent graduates had taken advantage, prior to college, of what’s arguably one of the best ways to fund higher education – 529 savings plans.

GK Questions for kids between 4 to 8 years

Unlike regular bank savings accounts, they provide a tax-advantaged way to save money to cover tuition, books and other education-related expenses at most accredited two- and four-year colleges, universities and vocational-technical schools.

The key phrase being “tax-advantaged.” Meaning, earnings grow federal income tax-deferred and withdrawals for qualified expenses are free from federal (and, in many places, state) income taxes – thus affording the opportunity to have even more saved for college.

Online Learning and Education During and After Covid

Significantly, Ridolfi says families using a 529 plan managed by Fidelity have been starting to sock money away earlier than ever before, with contributions beginning on average when the child is about age six-and-a-half. Thirty-six percent of Fidelity 529s are even opened for beneficiaries under age 2.

You say a child hasn’t even uttered his or her first complete sentence before they’re two? Probably not. But just so you’re not bushwhacked when they suddenly hit their late teens, free online resources such as Fidelity’s College Savings Learning Center and College Savings Quick Check– a calculator that even shows you the impact of saving a few dollars more a month – can help prepare you for what lies ahead.

Shortages in Meat Inspire More To Try Plant-Based Protein

In periods of change, we often find comfort in simple pleasures. A great burger is one of them.Yet, some of those simple pleasures have been compromised by the dramatic changes caused by COVID-19, including the disruption of the animal meat industry. Meat plants are closing, causing meat to be harder to find and its prices to rise.

Some grocers are limiting the amount of meat shoppers can buy to curb pantry loading.I know these issues will be resolved as the pandemic subsides. The animal meat industry will recover, and supply chains will be restored. But right now, you may be asking: What do I do without meat? Now is the time to try plant-based protein.

COVID-19 Fallout: Americans Changing Their Higher Ed Plans

Made from simple ingredients you know, Lightlife plant-based meat is as nutritious as it is delicious. And you can find the products in your grocer’s meat case.To be clear, I’m not against the animal meat industry. I believe we’re all trying to solve the same complex challenge: how to feed Americans during this pandemic.

But I do believe no diet should be entirely dependent on animal meat. That’s why Lightlife is committed to delivering plant-based protein throughout the country to ensure as many people as possible have access to the food they need.At Lightlife, we’re not asking you to give up animal meat. If you want to eat meat, eat meat.

But we believe you should also eat plants: whole plants and plant-based protein. That’s why we strive to bring more high-protein options to your table. Fortunately, the trend toward eating more plant-based protein began well before COVID-19, driven by a desire for more balance and variety in our diets, as evidenced by the fact that 44 percent of Americans now describe themselves as flexitarian. In fact, Lightlife sales were up significantly in the first quarter of 2020.

And longer term, the plant-based meat category is expected to grow exponentially, with the Good Food Institute predicting a threefold increase in the number of American households regularly purchasing plant-based protein1.The reality is it takes a little more work these days to make a good burger, even the ones we make with simple ingredients. I want you to know that we’re committed to your dinner table. And your lunch table.

And if you want a burger for breakfast, your breakfast table, too.I am so proud of our production teams working around the clock to ensure our products are available at your local grocer. To ensure their health and safety, we have taken additional steps including social distancing wherever possible, daily temperature checks and health screenings, face coverings, increased sanitation efforts, and staggered breaks and start times to reduce the potential for congestion.

What is The Importance of Female Education

This is in addition to the sanitation procedures our team is already accustomed to, and the variety of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) we routinely wear. This is all part of our dedication to getting high-quality, plant-based protein to your tables. Because whether your burger is made from ground beef or plant-based ingredients, a good burger is something we can all agree on.

COVID-19 Fallout: Americans Changing Their Higher Ed Plans

COVID-19 Fallout: Americans Changing Their Higher Ed Plans

The move to online classes at colleges and universities to deal with COVID-19 isn’t making the grade with many Americans.A whopping 80 percent of those currently saving for an in-person higher education, either for themselves or their kids, said in a new poll from Edward Jones and Morning Consult that they worried the "quality of education" may suffer as a result of the switch to partial or full-time remote instruction – with 35 percent stating they were "very concerned."

That statistic alone should trouble schools like Harvard University, where tuition runs about $49,700 annually, that are already under fire from students and parents over their current refusal to lower costs this academic year.

Mental Health of Students Must Figure in Restarting Classes

However, pandemic aside, the national poll of 2,200 adults also hinted at the impact of critics who question whether the return on investment is worth it for at least certain degrees:* 20 percent of respondents were more likely, at least for now, to skip getting a higher education and instead seek full-time employment or an internship.*

Another 20 percent were more apt to take "a gap year" before continuing their schooling.* 17 percent were leaning more towards attending an in-person trade or vocational school.* Another 17 percent were more likely to attend an in-person community college.

What is The Importance of Female Education

Things, of course, could change dramatically once the coronavirus either runs its course or a vaccine is found. In fact, Tim Burke, who’s responsible for education savings at the financial services firm Edward Jones, makes the case that people should take the long view in what he calls "this period of uncertainty."

"As learning environments and needs change in light of the pandemic," he said, "it’s critical to keep in mind that higher education will continue to be important. So proper steps to save should remain a top priority."

Experts agree that one of the best ways to do so is through what’s known as a 529 plan. Unlike personal savings accounts, these state-sponsored plans -which 21 percent of those polled already use – have for decades provided a tax-advantaged way to sock away money to cover tuition, books, and other expenses at most accredited two- and four-year colleges, universities and vocational-technical schools.

Private K-12 education, student debt repayment, and registered apprenticeships were also recently included."Yes, educational expenses would include a new laptop or internet access for those who choose to learn from home," said Nela Richardson, an investment strategist at Edward Jones.Exactly what does "tax-advantaged" mean? Simple.

The earnings in those 529s – typically comprised of a portfolio of funds – accumulate tax-free, and qualified withdrawals are exempt from federal income taxes. The federal gift tax exclusion allows a contributor to give up to $15,000 a year, per beneficiary, or $30,000 for married couples.

But here’s what a lot of people don’t realize: While almost every state has its own 529 plan, there’s no "home-town" restriction that would keep you from selecting one with a higher total aggregate cap – some are more than $500,000, which would come in handy for those also thinking Harvard Medical School – or a more attractive mix of funds.

As officials across the nation decide how best to open schools, one aspect too often overlooked is students’ mental health. Awareness of the pressures on our children is the first step towards helping them heal and preparing them to learn.

Explore Personal Style With Home Decorating Tips From an Artist

COVID-19 has left many kids feeling lonely and isolated. Research on the effect of the lockdowns published in the June issue of the Journal of the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry concludes that young people experiencing loneliness may be as much as three times more likely to sink into depression in the future, but additionally that their mental health could be impacted for at least nine years because of it.

One answer? Since 2003, HealthCorps has worked in high-need schools, supplementing existing health and wellness programs emphasizing physical activity, nutrition, mental resilience and civic engagement. These are teenagers who, even in normal circumstances, experience disparities in access to health services based on their socioeconomic status, geographic region, race or ethnicity – with perhaps predictable results. Specifically, higher rates of chronic disease (including stress) and lower measures of both quality of life and life expectancy.

And yet, through our unique curriculum – created by top heathcare professionals and constantly updated to match students’ needs – the students we work with have flourished. They exercise more, eat better, and practice positive thought. And, yes, they engage with their communities.

Get UPSC Jobs with Complete Guidance and Proper Study Material

Since stress has always been an issue for many of these teens, one of the most requested lessons we were asked to bring to classrooms even before the pandemic hit was  “Bust My Stress.”  And now? Add the coronavirus-induced feelings of isolation to that equation, and you begin to see how fragile our nation’s teens may be.

As one of our Florida students so heartbreakingly told us amid the lockdowns: “I still keep it in, but I still think negative like every night. I cry it out so I won’t have to feel that way again in the morning.”

Building mental resilience has become an increased focus of our work.

Of course, parents have their own role to play in their teenagers’ healing process.

“They can help by reassuring teens that, just because they’re nervous or scared, doesn’t mean they’re really in any danger,” says Mark Goulston, M.D., a HealthCorps advisory board member and widely quoted expert on building a positive culture. “By reminding them that their bodies don’t really understand the fear, and by talking it out and discussing the fear, both the parent and child will feel better and closer.”

The HealthCorps program is delivered by highly trained recent college graduates who are future medical and health policy professionals. They interact with teens on a daily basis – though, these days, virtually – and have developed some simple steps that can help youths through these trying times. Among them:

Talking Books Aid Visually Impaired, Physically Disabled

• Meditate or try deep-breathing methods, which increase your body’s natural ability to relax during high-stress moments.

• Get moving.

• Prioritize sleep.

• Talk things out with someone you trust.

• Do or watch something that makes you laugh.

• Keep a non-judgmental journal to help process thoughts.

• Practice gratitude and positive self-talk.

One last thing. These tips and others, available on our new @teenhealthvibe Instagram channel can also apply to adults.

Each year, some 150,000 children in Nigeria are born with sickle cell disease, the most common – and often life-threatening – inherited blood disorder in the world.

"I was not happy when I read that Nigeria will have the highest contribution to the global burden of sickle cell disease by 2050 – if we continue at the present birth rate and the level of inactivity in newborn screening," says hematologist Obiageli Nnodu, M.D., the lead researcher in Nigeria for the Sickle Pan African Research Consortium (SPARCo), funded by the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI), part of the National Institutes of Health. "As a country, we can do better than that.

To help address the problem on a global scale, the NHLBI has been supporting programs in sub-Saharan Africa, where more than 75 percent of the sickle cell disease births worldwide occur. SPARCo, with a hub in Tanzania, and additional sites in Nigeria and Ghana, works to develop an infrastructure for sickle cell disease research, health care, education, and training to take place in Africa.

"We are showing that with effective partnerships, significant advances in health and biomedical science can be achieved," says Tanzania-based Julie Makani, M.D., Ph.D., who leads the SPARCo consortium. SPARCo, in collaboration with the Sickle Africa Data Coordinating Center, led by Ambroise Wonkam, M.D., in South Africa, created Sickle In Africa, which has a growing electronic registry of more than 10,000 individuals with sickle cell disease.

"The genetic diversity of Africa’s population allows scientific research that will increase our understanding of how a disease caused by a single gene can manifest in such different ways," Makani explains.Newborn screening, as Nnodu notes, is the first step to reduce mortality and suffering for these children, and for that, they need good tests readily available at the point of care.

That’s why NHLBI supports research towards development of diagnostics, such as a new rapid result test that is relatively inexpensive, accurate, and can provide a timely diagnosis of sickle cell disease. The test does not require sophisticated laboratory equipment, electricity, refrigeration, or highly trained personnel – a critical advantage for countries with few resources.

On the treatment front, a large multinational NHLBI-funded clinical trial found that a daily hydroxyurea pill was safe and effective for young children living with sickle cell disease in sub-Saharan Africa. The NHLBI also has its sights on developing genetic therapies for the disease, as part of a newly announced NIH collaboration with the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.

The goal of the partnership, which also addresses HIV, is to advance possible gene-based cures to clinical trials in the United States and relevant countries in sub-Saharan Africa within the next seven to 10 years."A person’s health should not be limited by their geographic location, whether it’s in rural America or sub-Saharan Africa," says Gary H. Gibbons, M.D., director of the NHLBI.

"Harnessing the power of science is needed to transcend borders if we want to improve health for all."

High School Success Stories: Helping All Students Thrive

By Carrie Goux For NewsUSA(NewsUSA) – At a time when it’s hard to find moments of everyday joy during the school year, a leading nonprofit organization has given high schools reason to celebrate. The third annual GreatSchools College Success Award recognizes schools that provide a strong foundation for their students to build pathways after graduation. This is the only national award that uses education data to identify schools that prepare their students not only to enroll in college, but return for a second year and succeed in college-level coursework.

This year GreatSchools presented the 2020 award to 2,158 schools in the 29 states that connect postsecondary data to high school information. The College Success Awards also offer a glimpse into the best practices woven into the fabric of these schools, from ensuring rigorous academics are widely available to providing 1:1 college counseling for every student.

As the pandemic continues to threaten the financial stability of the nation and disrupt opportunities for young people, these award-winning high schools can offer hope to communities looking for strength to recover from devastating loss.

The College Success Award helps the entire learning community understand which schools in their area adequately prepare students to graduate, enroll in college, and succeed once they get there.Schools are complex. They succeed (and stumble) in many different ways — but this award seeks to highlight successes that might not otherwise be seen.

Class 12th My Mother At Sixty-Six Summary

At Veterans Memorial High School in Brownsville, Texas, success includes encouraging all students — 92 percent of whom are low-income — to explore the school’s 13 dual-enrollment classes. At Newark’s North Star Academy, after research showed low-income graduates lacked college-savvy support, the school created an alumni department that offers coaching to college freshmen to help them adjust to their new life.

These are just a few of the best practices the College Success Award reveals. Parents and school leaders can find out if their school won an award and explore more insights about how to look for schools engaging in practices that will help their child succeed by visiting GreatSchools.org to search for their school, and learn from videos, articles, and more. Live Online Academy Prepares Preschoolers for Next Steps

The ongoing coronavirus pandemic is reshaping and challenging the field of education, particularly early childhood education, where the benefits of in-person school are well understood but simply not an option for many children for at least the remainder of the current school year.Kids ‘eTuitionClasses’ Kids Learning Academies, a leading national childcare provider, recognized the need for more options for early childhood education for children unable to attend preschool in person, and responded by creating the Kids ‘eTuitionClasses’ Kids Online Learning Academy.

The Kids ‘eTuitionClasses’ Kids Online Academy is an online learning platform designed to engage early learners in a structured, curriculum-based platform that allows for teacher and peer interaction. It helps preschoolers practice developmentally appropriate key concepts in topics including literacy, math, science, and social studies while having fun and refining physical and social/emotional skills as well. The Online Academy includes live, interactive 30-minute classes Monday through Friday, hosted by a certified teacher.

The activities are based on the exclusive, research-based Kids ‘eTuitionClasses’ Kids curriculum, and children are able to ask questions, play games, and participate in arts and crafts.Children are online together, so teachers can get to know them and call on them to respond and participate. However, there is no camera or video access on the child’s side for safety and privacy.Parents and their preschoolers report high levels of satisfaction with the program, as one mom in Texas says on behalf of her son, "we have felt very guilty about keeping him at home even though we know this is all just temporary.

New Data: AP CSP Course is Diversifying Computer Science Pipeline

For too long there has been a shortage of women and a lack of diversity in both computer science classrooms and in the workforce. AP Computer Science Principles, or AP CSP, was introduced by the College Board four years ago to change the invitation to computer science and address the shortage of young women and students of color entering the fields of science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM).

Now, there is encouraging news about efforts to prepare more students –and a more diverse set of students — for the next generation of computer science jobs. According to new College Board data, students from the class of 2019 who took Advanced Placement Computer Science Principles (AP CSP) were three times more likely to declare a computer science major in college, compared to similar students who did not take AP CSP.

Differences are similarly large for female, Black, Hispanic, and first-generation college students.New research out today is good news for business leaders looking to hire the next generation of computer science workers. "Four years ago, we set out to change the invitation to computer science education," says College Board Global Policy Chief Stefanie Sanford. "This new research provides compelling evidence that AP CSP is doing exactly that.""We are inspired to see how this course is playing a role in students’ high school and college careers just four years after its launch. States, schools, and educators providing access to AP CSP are ensuring a more representative body of students will become our next generation of computer scientists, engineers, and technology leaders."College freshmen who declare a computer science major take a critical step toward receiving the second-highest-paid college degree in the nation, according to the National Association of Colleges and Employers.

The median annual wage for computer and information technology occupations was $88,240 in May 2019. And yet, a code.org analysis of 2017 Bureau of Labor Statistics data finds women represent just 24 percent of the 5 million people in computing occupations, while 15 percent are Black or Hispanic. The College Board study also finds AP CSP students are nearly twice as likely to enroll in AP Computer Science A (AP CSA) — a more computer-programming-focused course — compared to similar students who did not take CSP. Black students who take AP CSP are three times more likely to also take AP CSA. Notably, that’s virtually the same share as Asian CSP students, who have long led AP CSA participation.Business leaders such as Shanika Hope, head of the U.S. division of Amazon Future Engineer, are enthusiastic about AP Computer Science Principles and its future economic impact.

"At Amazon, we know a high-quality computer science education is key to helping students build their best and brightest future, especially those from underserved and underrepresented communities. We’re excited that today’s research shows further evidence that courses like AP CSP — which we provide for thousands of our Amazon Future Engineer schools across the U.S. — are preparing a more diverse group of students to enter the 21st century workforce."The first year of AP Computer Science Principles in 2016-17 attracted more students than any other AP course debut, and participation is on the rise. Still, not all students have access to high-quality computer science education.

Currently, less than half of the nation’s high schools teach foundational computer science. States are working to broaden participation in computer science by passing policies to make computer science a fundamental part of the K-technology12 education system. Students interested in AP CSP can learn more at collegeboard.org/csp.

How Hands-On Learners Thrive as Transportation Techs

The arrival of the new year means new decisions for students planning their futures. Although the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic has thrown many students’ career plans for a loop, the increased time at home allows students and parents to reflect and explore opportunities they might not have considered. One place to start is by discovering a student’s learning style.Everyone has a learning style. Some people are visual learners, some learn best by listening, and some are hands-on — they learn by doing. For these hands-on learners, a career in a hands-on field, such as the high-tech transportation industry, not only suits their strengths, but also brings them satisfaction and security. As many parents spend more time observing their children’s learning in a virtual school environment, they are developing an appreciation for different learning styles. Many hands-on learners struggle in traditional learning environments. However, these children and teens thrive when they engage in educational opportunities that support their strengths, and can put them on the road to successful careers.

School Choice Is One of The Biggest Decisions You Can Make

Maybe it was a sleek, reusable water bottle. Whatever it was, most of us probably bought or received a gift last month that was marketed as eco-friendly, ethically-sourced, or giving back to the community. I believe in the wisdom of giving gifts that have multiple beneficiaries. But if there’s one area where bringing ethics and intentionality into a consumer decision can have the biggest impact, I’d focus on K-12 education.Education is a choice — such as what car or groceries to buy, but with higher stakes. America’s 56 million students, and their parents, are the consumers. The more that parents can select schools based on values and needs — without income or zip code restrictions — the more we’ll see the power of parent consumers in action. That’s a positive power. And during a school year disrupted by COVID-19, we need it more than ever.

A few years ago, I heard this power described by the principal at a magnet school that had just been ranked the nation’s best high school by U.S. News & World Report. The principal spoke of the school’s academic excellence in tandem with the idea of families being conscious consumers who “bought into” their education choice. She said that when families and students actively choose a school, learning becomes something students want to do rather than have to do. In other words, when families actively invest in an education choice, it advances the entire school community. In my work as president of National School Choice Week, I’ve consistently seen that to be true, at traditional public schools, public charter schools, public magnet schools, online schools, private schools, and homeschool co-ops. When parents are education consumers, it encourages schools to be transparent, creates more opportunities for kids, and forges innovative bonds among teachers, parents, and community organizations.Choice also allows families to match education to their personal learning values. For instance, in Florida, Arizona, Idaho, and other states with flexible open enrollment laws, families can select the best school fit from an array of free public options. This allows families to choose from various locations, school cultures, and extracurricular offerings—the very non-test score factors that parents care just as deeply about as academics. This January 24-30 is National School Choice Week, a weeklong public awareness effort that encourages families to learn about all types of education and truly engage in their school choice. You can join the effort and learn about your state’s options at schoolchoiceweek.com. After all, making a school decision, and staying involved in it year-round, is one of the most powerful consumer decisions you’ll ever make. Poem 2nd NCERT Class 12th An Elementary School Classroom in a Slum Summary

Ajay Sati
Poem 2nd NCERT Class 12th An Elementary School Classroom in a Slum Summary

An Elementary School Classroom in a Slum Summary

Introduction

Stephen Spender in ‘An Elementary School Classroom in a Slum’ deals with the themes of school injustice and class inequalities. The children of a slum school are like the scum of the earth. Their faces are pale. Their hair are torn around like rootless weeds. They are stunted figures with twisted bones. They inherit diseases of their parents. They belong to the dirty world of holes. The poet thinks that the gap of the two worlds can be abridged. These unfortunate children must be taken out of these dirty and unhygienic surroundings. They must breathe in fresh and open air. They should be allowed to have full mental as well as physical development.

Summary

1. School Children of a Slum

The school children of sulms present a very pathetic picture. They have pale and lifeless faces. Their disorderly hair are torn around like rootless wild plants. They are depressed and keep their heads down. Their growth is blocked and they inherit the diseases of their parents. They do have dreams. The sweet young boy sitting at the back of his dim classroom dreams of squirrel’s games. He dreams of other interesting places other than his dull and drab classroom.

Mother At Sixty-Six Simmary

2. The World of the Rich is not Their World

Neither literature nor the institutions have anything to do with these unfortunate children. The ‘belled and flowery’ world of the rich is quite foreign to them. The map of the world is drawn according to the will and whims of the mighty. Their world has no slums. The world of slums is confined to narrow streets sealed in with a lead sky. Their stinking world is far, far away from the spacious world of rivers, capes and stars.

3. Foggy Slums- Blots on Their Maps

What is the use of literature and Shake-speare for the children of slum schools? Nothing. The map is the world is meaningless for them. It doen’t include their narrow lanes and crampled holes in it. The world of the rich and the powerful has so many beautiful things. It has ships, sun and love. They tempt these unfortunate children. They vainly try to steal them. These children live on the heap of waste. All their time and space are spent in the foggy slums. These ugly slums are like little hells. They are ugly blots on their maps- the world of the rich and the powerful.

4. Freedom from Bonds

All the governors, teachers and other responsible persons own a duty to these children. They can’t have their own separate cosy world. There are two different and distant worlds. They will have to be abridged. Anything that binds and block the progress of these slum children will have to be broken. Their world must not be confined to narrow lanes and cramped holes. It must extend and expand to the vast golden coasts of the azure sea. They will have to be given complete freedom to express themeselves. The pages of books must open for them. Only those who have the warmth and strength of the sun create history.

2. Looks at the World Outside

The lifeless and faded face of her mother pains her heart. The old lady seems to be lost in her own thoughts. The poet turns away her attention from her mother and lools outside. The world outside is full of life and activity. The trees seem running past. The children look happy and gay while moving out of their homes in groups.

3. Familiar Childhood Ache Returns

When they are at the airport, they have to undergo a security check. Standing a few yards away, she looks again at her old mother. Again she is pained to look at the colourless, lideless and pale face of her mother. Her face looks faded like the late winter’s moon which has lost its shine and strength. This arouses the old familiar ache in her heart. Her childhood fear possesses her again. But she composes herself to look normal. She scatters smile on her face saying goodbye to her. She wishes to meet her old Amma again.
